In some cases the GP's will offer a delayed prescription if you're presenting symptoms fail to resolve. The GP will document in your notes that they have offered this and you will be asked to contact the surgery after an agreed timescale. The receptionist will then send this message into the GP who will then issue a prescription.
In some cases certain infections will resolve on their own. The below table can provide an indication of what these timescales look like:
