Antibiotic Resistance and Delayed Presciptions

Last year the surgery participated in Antibiotic Awareness Week to help tackle Antibiotic resistance. Information on antibiotic resistance can be found here: https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/antibiotics/antibiotic-antimicrobial-resistance/

In some cases the GP's will offer a delayed prescription if you're presenting symptoms fail to resolve. The GP will document in your notes  that they have offered this and you will be asked to contact the surgery after an agreed timescale. The receptionist will then send this message into the GP who will then issue a prescription.

In some cases certain infections will resolve on their own. The below table can provide an indication of what these timescales look like:

If after these guidelines you are not seeing any improvement, please telephone the surgery. Please also note that there is also 7 ailments that are treatable over the counter at the pharmacy. These are listed below. If antibiotics are required, they are able to provide these for the applicable conditions:

  • Sinusitis (adults and children aged 12 years and over)
  • Sore throat (adults and children aged 5 years and over)
  • Earache (children and young adults aged 1 to 17 years)
  • Infected insect bite (adults and children aged 1 year and over)
  • Impetigo (adults and children aged 1 year and over)
  • Shingles (adults aged 18 years and over)
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (women aged 16 to 64 years).
